History
Oakmere W. I. was formed fifty-five years ago, although the Hertfordshire Federation of Women’s Institutes was formed 92 years ago in 1919.
Our institute is lively and outward looking and the
members enjoy meeting new visitors and having new interests.
Oakmere W.I. What did we do in 2012?
It has been another busy and happy year for Oakmere W.I.
We have had a varied and interesting selection of speakers at our monthly meetings, and they have been enjoyed and appreciated by the members. We have to thank Jacky Walker, for her hard work in finding and booking all of these speakers for the whole year.
Jacky also had the task of organising a coach outing to visit Greys Court, a Tudor country house near Henley-on-Thames that is now owned by the National Trust. It was a rather chilly day but it didn’t spoil our enjoyment of a lovely day out.
During the year several members have been in groups to Wyllyotts to see shows and films, sometimes enjoying a pre-show meal.
In June we had our annual Quiz Night, which is open to members of the public. This is great fun and gives husbands and friends a chance to join in with our social activities. We also raised funds for our W.I.
In March our 56th Birthday Meeting was a special one as two of our members had reached their 90th birthdays. As usual we welcomed our guests from neighbouring W.I.s, and enjoyed an excellent buffet which was provided by one of our birthday ladies.
Some of our members have opened their homes for lunches, coffee mornings and coffee evenings, which as well as being very enjoyable social events, have raised funds for our W.I. so that we can afford good speakers for our meetings.
Apart from raising funds for our W.I., during the year we raised money for our charity, the Hertfordshire Air Ambulance, and one of our members opened her home for a coffee morning in aid of the Macmillan Cancer Nurses and raised £352.
Our monthly lunch club continues to be well supported, as is our reading group. We now have a small knitting group and card making/craft group.
Our year ended with a hearty Christmas lunch at the Dutch Nursery, and we are looking forward to 2013 with our W.I. and any new members who would like to join us. So if you are interested, don’t be shy – give us a try!
If you are interested please call our Secretary Ro Barry on 01707 645482 or our President Betty Armsby on 01707 649934 or you can e-mail Ro at roandjohn@byngbarry.fsnet.co.uk
